What is 1R ?
1R is an endeavor of Youth Enlightening the Society to create awareness about drug abuse, identify cases of addiction and provide counseling .

Why 1R:Abuse of drugs, narcotics and other substance has grown unabated and at an alarming rate. Children as young as 12-13 years of age have been caught in the clutches of drug addiction. 1R is thus an effort to check the spread of this problem and eradicate it from the society. At present, 1R is involved in an interactive session, of one hour duration, with school children from class 8th onwards, regarding the effects of drugs and substance, in a coherent, interesting and inspiring manner, so as to create awareness and discourage their use. The Session involves a slide show presentation, prepared in collaboration with Dr. Ravi Sharma, HOD, Psychiatry deptt. IGMC. The presentation also includes various interactive features, such as role play and other such games, as well as a Question & Answer round, where a doubts and queries of the students are answered. The basic objective behind 1R is to disseminate information regarding the evils of Drug Abuse, and so as to enable the students to make an informed choice. 1R also proposes to hold an interactive session with the parents teachers association with the help of the specialized Consultants from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla as well as representatives of the State Police & Narcotics Wing It is proposed that there would be different types of methods adopted like inter school competitions and rallies etc. to aware not only the students but also the general public.

Present Scenario- based on the survey conducted by YES:
Almost every fourth student in the capital city is a drug user, says a study on drug abuse in the state. Not just this, every second boy and every third girl run a high risk of drug addiction as “peer influence and easy access to drugs” are the most potent risk factors of drug abuse among them. As per a study conducted by YES and Department of Community Medicine, IGMC, on drug abuse conducted on 2,046 students, (1,267 boys and 779 girls) in seven government and five private schools, the results paints a grim picture of drug abuse in the city. These findings were published in leading daily newspapers of the State. The major leveraging factors behind drug abuse are Peer influence, parents using drugs or alcohol, poor academic and lack of commitment to studies and broken homes have emerged as potent risk factors, pushing schoolchildren into drug trap". The study says the prevalence of drug abuse and exposure to drugs is nearly the same among boys of both private and government schools. But significantly, these rates are higher among girls in private schools as compared with girls in government schools. The study shows that the 56 per cent boys and 33.8 per cent girls in private schools say that they use multiple drugs. It turns out over 54.2 per cent boys and 19.7 per cent girls in government schools say that they use drugs regularly. Study finds that 21 per cent of the students are the regular users of multiple drugs, including marijuana or hashish (bhang), inhalants. Most use tobacco (29.3 per cent), alcohol (25.5 per cent), hash (20.8 per cent) and inhalants (8.8 per cent) as their choice of most frequently used drugs. Over 12 young lives have been lost to drug abuse in the recent past in Shimla. In Mandi, over 25 per cent of the families are bearing the pangs of drug addiction silently, reveals an unofficial survey. Moreover, over 250 cases of drug addiction, referred from all over the state on an average every year, seek treatment at the Department of Psychiatry, IGMC. "These are only 10 per cent of the cases of drug abuse in the state", says Dr Ravi Sharma, Professor and head, psychiatry. "Hashish or marijuana account for 40 per cent of addiction after alcohol which accounts for 60 per cent cases".
